There is no doubt about the importance of networking and FCB has been incorporating many events to help students get a foot in the door of their area of study. Friday, October 4, 2013 marked the 15th annual accounting career panel.

“Yes, it was another great success,” said Bob Kilpatrick, professor of accounting. “There were just over 200 junior, senior, and 5th year / MBA students attending, and roughly 80-90 sophomores.”

More than 25 accounting professionals spoke to students regarding various aspects of working in an accounting position.

“There are members of the Accounting Advisory Council on the list, who are the “official” co-sponsors of the event (along with the Accounting Area Faculty), representatives and alumni from various CPA firms that recruit our graduates, and select alumni who bring a different career perspective to the panels,” Kilpatrick said.

Shannon Johnson, one of the students who attended the panel, said it was really beneficial to her.

“Cait [McGowan, alumn '11], from McGladrey, was happy to tell me about the community service that her firm does,” Johnson said. “It was great to hear about what accountants can do to give back to the community. As a  female student, it was inspiring to see so many powerful women in the accounting career.”

The event consisted of two sessions of six concurrent panels in the afternoon and a reception afterwards with 38 mock interviews held throughout the day.

The topics that the panelists covered ranged from dispelling preconceptions about accounting as a career path to how to be a successful student and how to land a job after graduating.

“The accounting career panels were a great opportunity to make connections with professionals in the accounting field,” said Holly Krueger, another student who attended.

“I appreciated the opportunity to speak with accountants in a setting where I felt comfortable asking questions about the career,” Johnson concluded.
