On February 8, 2013, students gathered to participate in a fast-paced entrepreneurial event called Startup Weekend. The event was held in the du Bois Center on NAU campus. It began on Friday as everyone got to know each other and formed teams then ended Sunday evening when a winning team was chosen by a panel of three judges with Marc Chopin, professor of economics, being one of them.

"The judges all have experience in the start-up realm as entrepreneurs, investors, coaches and mentors for entrepreneurs and similar roles," Chopin explained.

FCB student Anthony Pasiecki compiled a team of other like-minded students to come up with a business plan. Cody Buchanan, Kevin Ordean, Matthew Laessig, Raechel Medak, and Tam Nguyen worked together to formulate a sucessful pitch and named their company Mt. Rich Growers.

“Our plan was to create a fully sustainable compost business that uses local organic sourced materials from restaurants and farmers that would otherwise end up in the local landfill,” he said.

At the end of the weekend, Mt. Rich Growers took home the prize of $5,000 from the Northern Arizona Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology (NACET) to get their business started. They will also have an office at NACET.

They will be using the money to purchase any equipment, land, or permits that the business will need in order to be successful.

According to Professor Chopin, the winning team was chosen based on the viability of the product and the likelihood that the business would start and be successful.

“I'm not an engineer or a writer, but as a business student I was hoping to meet people that could fill in the gaps,” Pasiecki said. “I did meet several of these people and had a great experience learning many new and applicable things. I learned how to assemble a team of completely different people and make it a success. I believe this is the lesson that will most benefit me for the rest of my life.”
