Finding Love at the VSC

Michelle Hagan, Air Force veteran and NAU alumn (‘15 ECO), and Justin Johnson, Marine Corps veteran and accountancy major, have made wedding plans after being introduced through the Veteran Student Center (VSC) two years ago.

Hagan attended one of the Food for Thought events held by the VSC where she met Laurie Jordon, VSC program coordinator. Hagan was having trouble adjusting to student life and asked if she could help out at the center to be among fellow veterans.

“[Hagan] was actually writing a paper on veterans transitioning, and I thought that was perfect,” Jordon said. “I had her send me a resume, and I hired her.”

Johnson was hired around the same time at the VSC. The two shared a small double desk for student workers when the center was still at its temporary location in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Being both veterans and students in the FCB, they had a lot in common.

“When I first started working he was my trainer, and we hit it off and ended up going on a date a couple days later,” Hagan said. “I asked him because he wasn’t asking, and we just became best friends and fell in love and it’s been romance ever since.”

“It was instantaneous,” she said. “I immediately knew he was the one.”

“As the weeks went by, I noticed that their chairs were getting closer together, and then I absolutely noticed that there was a relationship developing there. They are both such great people, I thought it was a perfect match,” Jordon said.

It only took a year to get engaged and begin planning the wedding. They originally wanted to have it on campus at the High Country Conference Center but budget restrictions led them to decide on having a small picnic ceremony instead. The date is set for August 15, 2015 before Johnson begins his final semester at NAU.

The VSC is available for veterans to meet people with similar experiences and help ease the transition from military to student life. The hope is that they will be able to form strong friendships and connections with each other.

“We had no idea we were going to be a match-making center though!” Jordon said.
