Global Spotlight: Claudia Jurowski - A Well-Rounded Person

A well-traveled person is a well-rounded person. Dr. Claudia Jurowski, professor in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management (SHRM), has traveled all over the world. As a French major in college, her first experience in another country was studying abroad for six weeks in France. She has since had the opportunity to visit several more new and exciting countries.

“I think most of my big adventures began when I came to NAU,” she said. “Faculty and staff are encouraged to go to conferences and present their work.”

The list of places she has been includes South Africa, Greece, China, Hong Kong, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands, where she spent a semester as part of a faculty exchange program.

“Mostly, I think travel is just so interesting,” she explained. “It’s the newness of it; the excitement of finding places that you didn’t know were there; learning about different architecture, different flora and fauna; and the adventure of meeting new people.”

The most exciting trip she said she has gone on was when she attended a Think Tank in South Africa to design sustainable teaching modules. The modules are available at no cost to communities interested in designing sustainable tourism experiences.

Dr. Jurowski tries to gain knowledge from these new locations to share in her classroom.

“It’s made me a more creative person because I learn new ways of doing things and new ways of evaluating and thinking about ideas,” she said. “Their way of doing things is better for them than my way of doing things and, sometimes, their way of doing things is better for me to adapt as well.”

Her upcoming trips include travels to Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
