NAU Alum Mike Konefal Visits MGT 301
NAU alum Mike Konefal (’05 COM/PR) returned to Will Ott’s MGT 301 class on March 12, 2014. He spoke to students in the Operations Management class about his move to South America where he purchased the Tortilla Lady in 2010, a company that specializes in hand-made tortillas with no lard or preservatives. Konefal also talked about the company he founded, RisingHy. RisingHy makes specialty gourmet sauces with hot sauces being some of their most popular products. What sets his brand of hot sauces apart is their lack of vinegar and their promotion of health benefits from the use of habaneros. Konefal shared the exciting news that recently he signed a contract with Sprouts Farmers Market to carry RisingHy products.
Konefal talked to the students about some of the obstacles that he had to face when creating his own business, and about the lessons that he learned along the way. He told students that while it is important to plan ahead, it is also equally important to be flexible and roll with the punches when the planning does not work out as intended. He encouraged students to keep an eye on their reactions to the stressful situations and tense interpersonal relationships that can arise in the business world.
Konefal is a very energetic and entertaining speaker, and his open and inviting personality allowed for a lively discussion with the students. Student Kiara Weathersby enjoyed his talk and says that, “Most importantly he reminded us that we need to find what we are passionate about and pursue it.”
RisingHy just released some new products: Honey Mustard, Habanero Olive Oil, and Citrus Habanero Salt. Some lucky students got to receive these products as well as RisingHy’s Hot Sauce without vinegar and GreenGo Sauce.
