Pat Wicks Visits ACC 456
Esteemed NAU alumnus, Pat Wicks (’79 ACC), once again visited Professor Shinham’s ACC 456: Governmental Accounting class in early April 2014. Mr. Wicks is currently the director of finance for the City of Yuma, Arizona. He talked to the students about how he pulls together financial statements in order to create the city’s comprehensive financial reports. He was able to connect to his mainframe financial system in Yuma and show the students how the accounts were structured, and the way that the information was extracted, entered into Access and Excel programs, then used to derive financial statements.
This was a great opportunity for students to see how the information they are learning this semester can be applied, as well as exposing them to a different type of career path. Students received insight into the work life of a government accountant, and this encouraged them to consider this as an option for their future careers.
