Spring 2014 Career Exploration Day Was a Success For All
The Spring 2014 Career Exploration Day took place on February 27, 2014 with more than 65 companies attending. The building was absolutely buzzing with representatives talking to eager students who were dressed to impress. The recruiters seemed just as excited as students to be able to participate in this great networking opportunity. “I have to say this is one of the most organized events that I’ve ever been to. I think they’re doing a great job of putting together this event. Everything that they provide to us makes us feel welcome to come back again,” said Paychex representative AriFa.
AriFa was not only impressed with the event, but also with the students. She was impressed with the questions that students were asking and could tell that they were focused and driven. “You can see that something is being done right at the school,” she said.
Yelp representative Elisabeth, who has attended a few of The W.A. Franke College of Business career exploration days in the past, agrees that Northern Arizona University’s business students are special. “The students are well prepared. They know exactly what they’re looking for and what they want to do as far as their career goes when they graduate.” Elisabeth also appreciated that students are professional enough to not be afraid to say that their company does not fit their career goals. She appreciated the consideration of not wasting anyone’s time or efforts.
Kim Wilcox is now the assistant director at Forest Highlands, and is enjoying her unexpected career choice immensely. Working for the luxury golf course company was not where she expected to be, but now that she’s here, she loves it. When asked about her advice to students she said, “Keep your eyes open to everything. You never know exactly what you want to do, so be open to any opportunity.”
There were several alumni present as well, willing to talk to students about opportunities after college. Romiro Ayala (’12 HRM) started working for Panda Express the month before he graduated. Since then, he has been promoted twice and is currently enjoying the ride. His advice to students was to get involved in your sophomore and junior year by coming to the Career Exploration Days. “Get connected before you even graduate,” he encourages. “The earlier you get connected to the Real World, the better.”
Business student Danielle Zerr is doing exactly that. As a junior, she is building up a relationship with companies that she is interested in. She has attended a couple of the Career Exploration Days, and thinks that they are a great way to meet representatives.“It provides a lot of people that you can interact with that you wouldn’t be able to on a day to day basis or on your own so I think it’s a great opportunity.” Zerr is hoping that her continued efforts at the fairs will help her keep an open relationship with possible employers.
This semester’s Career Exploration Day was a great accomplishment for the Career Development Office (CDO). It was an exciting opportunity for students to network and to learn more about possible career opportunities. Company representatives only had positive things to say about NAU’s business students, which should make the students and faculty of FCB proud.
