The 2015 1st Annual Fastenal Sales Competition was hosted by NAU on Friday, March 6, 2015. Students from all majors were welcome to participate and test their sales skills.

Ten teams of two students worked with Fastenal – Phoenix/Northern Arizona district manager C. W. Brock. The students went on a live sales call with Brock to NAU's Frank Espinoza. Espinoza is in charge of safety-related issues at NAU and during the sales call the students were able to see these Fastenal representatives ask 15 minutes worth of fact finding and analysis-related questions. It was then up to the students to take that information plus what they learned about Fastenal and present a follow up sales call on how Fastenal would be able to meet the needs of NAU.

Tim Kraft, Fastenal regional vice president, and Blake Suedekum (also a district manager) served as judges, choosing the team with the best proposal.

Brock said, "Our goal behind the 1st Annual Fastenal/NAU Sales Competition was to give the students a real world experience in both sales and going into sales as a career. Those who competed were able to see a real life sales call between Fastenal and Frank Espinoza at NAU. I was amazed at the talent level of the students and impressed with the amount of time and energy they put into their presentations. Each of these students are going to be extremely successful in their careers, and it would be an honor to have the privilege to work alongside any of them in the future!"

The winning team consisted of senior management majors Chris Snowden-Santi and Karl Shilhanek. They won custom NAU Fastenal Sales Competition polos as well as the opportunity to go on an all-expense paid trip to Fastenal’s Supplier Expo in Nashville, Tenn. from April 7 to April 9 (story HERE).

Shilhanek said, "I don't think there is a better way for business students to get a true taste of what their career could entail…There is only one way to learn how quick ten minutes goes in a sales meeting, and impossible to understand how a sales call goes without watching one first hand. Combined with the information sessions beforehand, I thought we got a really good look at how to combine products, customer service, and reputation into a value proposition for the customer. This was an unbeatable experience for me, and it wouldn't have been as beneficial without the information sessions."

"I had a great experience with the NAU sales competition. I feel all of the students benefited from the real world sales call experience, and I personally benefited from the energy and enthusiasm that each of the students provided. I look forward to doing this again next year," said Suedekum.

Fastenal is a Fortune 500 company with more than 2,700 store locations where they supply industrial, facilities maintenance, and construction supplies. The hands-on sales experience they offer with this competition provides students with the chance to test their skills and decide if they want to go into sales.
