FCB Hosts Their Second Professional Selling Networking Mixer
On November 15, 2016 the FCB Professional Selling Program held its second Professional Sales Networking Mixer.
The purpose of the event was three-fold: to provide students a means to learn and practice networking skills in a comfortable setting; to learn the hands-on aspect of sales; and to connect with corporate professionals.
“[Networking] can be an awkward and nerve-racking situation,” explained Bernadine Lewis, director of Undergraduate Programs. “We want to teach our students how to maneuver through this and give them real-time experience.”
This year, business professionals from over 40 corporations and dozens of students attended the event.
The evening began with a brief presentation by Jana Carpenter, a sales and marketing professional who throughout her 30-year career held a number of senior-level marketing positions. Currently Carpenter serves as a Career Development Office (CDO) career coach. During her presentation Carpenter outlined the importance of networking and equipped students with strategies to make networking functions less stressful. Following Carpenter’s presentation, students and professionals gathered on the second floor of the business building to practice their newly-learned skills.
“As a student it’s important to start making connections with companies and employers early, so when you graduate you already have your foot in the door,” explained NAU alum Kaydi Defazio ('16 MKT) of United Rentals.
Although many of the companies in attendance were looking for students to fill internship and post-graduation positions, the event offered benefits to students of all grade levels.
“This event is for everyone; it’s a learning opportunity,” emphasized Lewis. “It’s important even if you’re not looking for a job right now that you get practice networking so you’re comfortable when it really matters.”
“I came to this event because I thought it would be a good learning opportunity,” explained freshman Patrick Walker. “I was nervous about attending the event, especially by myself, but I’m learning how to interact with people and to become more comfortable in these environments.”
The Professional Selling Networking Mixer event was created two years ago by FCB Associate Dean Kevin Trainor, associate professor of marketing, who realized the importance of developing networking skills and reception etiquette early on in students’ careers. Following the success of the past two events, Trainor plans to make the networking mixer an annual occurrence.
“It’s so great to see our students learning and practicing these very important skills while engaging with sales professionals. We’ve now held two very successful events and the feedback from students and professionals in attendance has been extremely positive. I’m excited to see this turn into a recurring event that students and our corporate partners look forward too,” explained Trainor.
The FCB would like to extend a huge thank you to the event’s corporate sponsors: Pepsi, United Rentals, and Fastenal, who played a significant role in the success of the event. Learn how to become a corporate partner HERE.
